Cambridge Keyboard Academy
Directors: Dr Francis Knights and Dr Nigel Yandell
The Cambridge Keyboard Academy is a specialist non-profit organization that promotes and supports education, training and research into keyboard performance, instruments and repertoire. The instruments covered include harpsichord, virginals, spinet, clavichord, organ, chamber organ, piano, fortepiano and harmonium.
CKA offers a number of short and long classical music courses for both small groups and individuals, led by specialist experts. The training courses are particularly intended for students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The core course offered is in Keyboard Skills, which comprises many elements that have been taught for centuries, especially to organists, and are a valuable supplement to individual instrumental lessons. The ability to read different notations, clefs and figured bass is essential for those studying music before Beethoven, while a good haptic grasp of keyboard harmony can significantly aid performing accuracy, sight-reading and improvisation skills. It also has real benefits for the study of composition and music analysis.
There will be an Open Day in autumn 2024, where prospective participants can meet some of the Tutors and ask questions about the courses.
